Prime Minister launches new fund for young people
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has launched a new initiative aiming to help young people across England play a more active role in their community.
Funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department for Communities and Local Government, The Youth of Today programme will look to encourage young people aged 13-19 to make the most of their talent and get their voices heard.
As part of the programme, the Young Foundation will manage a £1 million Youth of Today Leadership Fund to help third sector groups create additional leadership opportunities for young people.
“Scaling Up” grants ranging between £5,000 and £20,000 are on offer to enable organisations to expand existing initiatives, whilst a limited number of “Reaching Out” grants worth between £75,000 & £100,000 will also be up for grabs for established groups with a proven track record.
Announcing the initiative, Mr Brown said:
“The Youth of Today will enable more young people to have their voice heard through a dynamic partnership of leading charities that will help increase the quality of opportunities for young people.
“I want to see many more young people have the opportunity to be seen and heard as leaders in their communities, central to solving community problems and active in engaging their peers in bringing about change.”
Children’s Secretary Ed Balls added:
“Today’s young people are tomorrow’s leaders and The Youth of Today is a programme unlike any other where the focus is on young people getting to grips with leadership roles.
“’The Youth of Today programme offer young people the chance to shine and demonstrate their leadership talents.”

Young People’s Theatre Workshop for 14s – 19s
The Young People’s Theatre Workshop is the Royal Exchange Theatre’s regular group for 14s – 19s. From September 2009, this group is bigger than ever before, with two phases to the project.
PHASE ONE will begin in September, with the opportunity to join one of four new groups, exploring the world of theatre and expressing your own creativity…
ON THE PAGE (WRITING GROUP): Have you got a story to tell? Do you want to learn more about the craft of playwriting? From finding inspiration to creating characters and locations, weekly sessions will explore the techniques you need to bring your story to life on stage.
DIRECTING GROUP: How does a Director work with a creative team to shape the vision for a production? How do they encourage a creative atmosphere in rehearsals? How do they inspire actors to give their best performances? Explore the skills a director needs and see if you’ve got what it takes to bring a production together.
DRAMA GROUP: Discover techniques for using your voice, your body and your imagination to create the best performances you can. Work with theatre professionals on a range of drama-activities including storytelling, script-work and improvisation.
OFFSTAGE (DESIGN GROUP): Making theatre isn’t all about acting! Come along to discover how you can tell a story though light, sound, objects and costumes. Work with theatre professionals to create your own designs, discover how sound and light is controlled and explore what really goes on behind the scenes.
The young people who join these groups will then have the opportunity to join PHASE TWO of the YPTW: In January 2010, a group of young directors, designers, writers and performers will come together to create their own performances, installations and exhibitions for a celebration event in The Studio.
