Prime Minister launches new fund for young people

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has launched a new initiative aiming to help young people across England play a more active role in their community.

Funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department for Communities and Local Government, The Youth of Today programme will look to encourage young people aged 13-19 to make the most of their talent and get their voices heard.

As part of the programme, the Young Foundation will manage a £1 million Youth of Today Leadership Fund to help third sector groups create additional leadership opportunities for young people.

“Scaling Up” grants ranging between £5,000 and £20,000 are on offer to enable organisations to expand existing initiatives, whilst a limited number of “Reaching Out” grants worth between £75,000 & £100,000 will also be up for grabs for established groups with a proven track record.

Announcing the initiative, Mr Brown said:

“The Youth of Today will enable more young people to have their voice heard through a dynamic partnership of leading charities that will help increase the quality of opportunities for young people.

“I want to see many more young people have the opportunity to be seen and heard as leaders in their communities, central to solving community problems and active in engaging their peers in bringing about change.”

Children’s Secretary Ed Balls added:

“Today’s young people are tomorrow’s leaders and The Youth of Today is a programme unlike any other where the focus is on young people getting to grips with leadership roles.

“’The Youth of Today programme offer young people the chance to shine and demonstrate their leadership talents.”

Are you looking for something new to do on a week-night? Have you ever wondered how theatre is made? How can light and sound create whole worlds on stage? How does a director inspire an actor to give the performance of a lifetime?

If you’re aged 14 – 19 and you want to explore the world of theatre and express your own creativity, then the Royal Exchange Theatre has a group for you. Work with professional theatre mentors to explore how you can use your words, your voice, and your imagination to tell stories on stage.

The Young People’s Theatre Workshop (YPTW) is divided into two phases. PHASE ONE begins in September 2010, with four groups giving you the opportunity to explore the world of Theatre and express your own creativity. The young people who join these groups will be given the opportunity to apply for PHASE TWO of the YPTW project: From January 2011 a group of young directors, designers, writers and performers will come together to create their own very own piece of theatre in The Studio.

National Youth Conference

The National Youth Conference
Organised and Run by Young People for Young People

Who are the organisers?

UK Youth Voice (UKYV) is a group of young people between 16 & 25, who are elected by their peers. The elections take place at this annual conference. The group is made up of representatives of young people from the regions of England, the Channel Islands and from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. UKYV is a key part of the UK Youth network and is seen as a model of good practice in the field of youth participation.

Members of UKYV have a real say. They regularly interview for staff at both national and local levels. They have representatives on the board of trustees for UK Youth. Individual members have sat on local youth club committees and UK Youth network association boards.

What do we do?

  • We help shape the services provided by UK Youth.
  • We organise the annual conference based on themes of current interest to young people.
  • We run the workshops so that we can discuss issues of importance with other young people.
  • We are the voice for young people, bringing issues to the attention of government and other decision-makers.
  • We meet regularly throughout the year.
  • We attend events where the views of young people are needed.
  • We make ourselves heard!

Two night’s accommodation at Avon Tyrrell Activity Centre in The New Forest, meals, workshops and activities for £120 + VAT.
