Levenshulme High School students’ artworks feature in acclaimed exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery

Abby Shah, student at Levenshulme High SchoolArtworks by seven young female students from Levenshulme High School have gone on display at Manchester Art Gallery as part of the gallery’s critically acclaimed exhibition Angels of Anarchy: Women Artists and Surrealism.

The 15 year-old students have each created a surreal artwork, inspired by what it is like to be a young woman today. The artworks are the result of a partnership project between the school and Manchester Art Gallery, and form part of the students’ coursework for a double award GCSE in Applied Arts, which will be assessed later in the school year.

The young women began working with Manchester Art Gallery staff, and artist Amanda McCrann to create the artworks in July. Over the summer term, they visited the art gallery and enjoyed a number of practical workshops at school. The students also spent three days of their work experience at Manchester Art Gallery and have each kept a journal about their experiences and how their ideas have evolved during the project.

Istahil Yusuf, student at Levenshulme High School

Guided by artist Amanda and gallery staff, they looked at many of the artworks appearing in Angels of Anarchy and explored the theme of identity, recognising many ideas and issues addressed by the women surrealist artists that remained just as relevant to them as young women today. The resulting Teenangels exhibition includes artworks such as a mobile (or dream-catcher) suspended from the ceiling, made up of around 100 eyeballs, and poetry written backwards on a wall that is read through a mirror.

Alice Tasker, art teacher at Levenshulme High School reflected:
“The students have shown increased confidence, maturity and pride in their exhibited artwork. They are delighted with the responses from the public and how people are engaging and connecting with their themes. The project has given them real life work related experiences as artists in the art world.”

Angels of Anarchy: Women Artists and Surrealism is at Manchester Art Gallery from 26 September 2009 – 10 January 2010. Tickets cost £6 (£4 concessions, with free entry for under 18s and Manchester Art Gallery Friends). For more information and to book tickets, please visit www.angelsofanarchy.org.uk
