Rhiannon Hunter | Productofboy | Ima-Abasi Okon | Taneesha Ahmed & Alex Moore | Renee Rhodes | Fivethreefive Project | Branka Vidovic-Butler | Lynne Heller | Ryan Campbell | Edwyn Butler | John Leyland & Annette Cookson

12 February – 11 April 2010 (Public preview: 11 February, 6-9pm)
Nexus Art Cafe, Manchester, www.nexusartcafe.com

Neck of the Woods is a group exhibition investigating artists’ responses into the concept of community and how this is evolving. Artists and practitioners join from throughout the UK and Internationally to challenge the audience’s preconceptions of community and how this can be explored within their own personal artistic practice.

Highlights of the exhibition include the work of Canadian artist, Lynne Heller. Within the online community of ‘Second Life’, Heller and her intrepid avatar, Nar Duell, will ‘wear’ an alternative avatar costume, a ‘walking’ snow globe. Whilst exploring her own virtual community she will also be available for online web-chats with visitors to the café.

Manchester-based artist Taneesha Ahmed collaborating with Alex Moore present their alternative community, The Denmasons, a secret society enticing viewers into a Denmasonic life-style. Whether you’re young or not so young you’ll remember those Sunday afternoons building a Den in the back garden – this is the moment to re-live those memories…

Neck of the Woods launches on Thursday 11 February with a public preview (6-9pm) including a live performance from Manchester-based Edwyn Butler replicating an old-fashioned Country and Western knees-up around the piano. Alongside this John Leyland and Annette Cookson will be collaborating on a one-off performance of works inspired by the exhibition.

Neck of the Woods is an exhibition curated by up and coming Blank Media Collective at Nexus Art Café opening with a public preview on 11 February (6-9pm) until 11 April. Find Out More on www.blankmediacollective.org/neckofthewoods

Have your say in the Arts Council National Strategy
Arts Council England have launched Achieving great art for everyone – a consultation on future priorities for the arts. The results of the consultation will inform a ten-year strategic framework and the Arts Council’s future investment decisions.
Achieving great art for everyone sets out the Arts Council’s understanding of the current arts landscape and pinpoints the areas that the Council believes need development. This is the first time the Arts Council has brought together all art forms and development areas into one set of long term priorities.
The consultation document outlines a vision for the future of the arts where England is a global creative hub, a platform for world-leading artistic excellence and innovation, and a great place for artists to live and work.
The Arts Council is inviting artists, arts organisations, partners and anyone interested in the arts to take part, including those from the commercial, amateur and voluntary sectors. The consultation will run until 14 April 2010 with the framework being published in late 2010. To find out more about how to take part and to download a copy of the consultation document visit www.artscouncil.org.uk/consultation.

Events & projects

Impact of Enyan Campaign ‘Young Arts Leaders’
To ensure that ENYAN is responding to the needs of the sector and prove influence and impact as a result of national campaign work, they are keen to gather feedback from all those who contributed to the campaign, have utilised the online campaign document (http://www.enyan.co.uk/download/304457542) and may have taken part in the campaign’s legacy training course produced by Artsplan ‘Using the arts to develop aspiration, potential and leadership’. This consultation involves various government departments, ENYAN’s National Steering Group, ENYAN RAPs and the wider membership.

ENYAN will be collating all responses to ascertain the level of impact this campaign has had both on the sector itself and those who are responsible for or have an interest in supporting it. They welcome all feedback, and are particularly keen to know how the campaign may have impacted on your knowledge of Young Arts Leaders programmes and your current/future programming.

Perhaps you have developed a new Young Arts Leaders project; been inspired by a case study to approach or structure a programme differently, accessed funding sources that were referred to in the resource? Please respond at: enyan@artswork.org.uk

The Composer Labs take place in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Truro between 7 February and 11 April. For the first time, an online version of a Composer Lab will also be made available from April. This will include footage from the various Labs, recommendations and tips.

Performance Opportunity: Contemporary Dancers Wanted

True Motion Dance Company is a contemporary dance company based in Manchester. They have just had a proposal accepted by Greenroom to perform as part of the Turn2010 platform in March.

They are currently looking for dancers to join the company and perform in the platform.

The company is looking for Manchester based dancers who enjoy working creatively and being part of the creative process, have a keen interest in abstract rather than narrative-led dance and want the opportunity to work within communities and educational organisations as well as create and perform work. It would be useful if you were interested in outreach work as well as performing.

The company is new and therefore payment is subject to funding. The performance in March will not be paid but they are looking to work with the same dancers to build the company and consequently be part of future opportunities when funding is available.

For more information please contact Kelly Marie Such, Artistic Director at the following e-mail: Kelly@truemotiondance.co.uk

Include your organisation in Extended Schools Directory

Manchester City Council’s Extended Schools Team is in the process of developing a directory of organisations that are able to provide extended services or activities for pupils attending schools in Manchester. The objective is to produce a central directory that can be accessed by all schools as they seek to commission services that will help them to deliver their extended provision such as after school sports, dance, music and arts.

This document is being developed to support schools with a significant new initiative called the ‘Extended Schools Subsidy Scheme’, which will provide additional funding for extra curricular activities to all Manchester’s schools during 2010-2011. This will result in many schools across the City commissioning activities from external services so inclusion in the directory could provide major benefits to your organisation, as all Manchester schools will be encouraged to use it.

This is a major information gathering exercise and the attached pro forma has been developed to enable the Extended Schools Team to collect the details of your organisation for inclusion in the finished document. If you wish your organisation to be included please complete the attached form and return to: extended.schools@manchester.gov.uk by Friday15th January.

If you have any queries regarding this project, please call Tom Joslin on 0161 234 6229.
