John Betjeman Young People’s Poetry Competition

The John Betjeman Young People’s Poetry Competition 2010 is co-sponsored by Shell International and St Pancras International station. The competition is open to 11-14 year-olds living in the British Isles. Entrants may submit one poem each about their local surroundings, whether a house, a street, a garden, a park, a city of a wider landscape. The spirit behind the competition is to encourage an understanding and appreciation of the importance of ‘place’. The prize of £1000 (£500 to the winner and £500 to the English department of their school) is donated by John Murray (Publishers) Ltd. The deadline for the competition is 31st July and winners will be notified by September. The prize-giving event will take place by the Betjeman statue on the upper concourse of St Pancras Station in October 2010. The entry form can be found here: http://www.johnbetjeman.com/comp.html
